Hunger Pangs

Acquisition breeds satisfaction
temporary gratification
Never absolute; never complete
Bound to evoke and attract
fresh surges of desire; wants,
bitings and cravings
acute need that postpones
Provokes stunted rationale
And creates motivation
Agitation from deprivation
and a deeply rooted
For those who have
That which they lack
Those of whom acute
Never precedes ‘shortage’
And surplus a common calculus
To whom ‘Hunger Pangs’ is
What I write about
Another title
In a provocative piece
Pangs with fangs
That quite unlike poison
Is a scourge abetted
Through commission or omission
Hunger from food and freedoms
Hunger from politics and politic
Hunger from disease and negligence
The bereavement of fundamental
Rights, needs and wants
Pillars that mark the structures of humanity
The cornerstones that anchor the will for sanity
Amongst a people destined for vanity The Pangs that keep us close
To nosing the goal
And fixates our egos
To focus on alleviating today
That which will bug us that day
That’s the Hunger I pen about
A necessary discomfort
Without which
You and me
Are a pack of busy bodies
Living for now
Oblivious of goals and effort
Oblivious of dreams
Of a meal earned
Oblivious of the fact that today, once gone, is done.
And that all we can change
Is that which we hunger for
That whose Pangs keep us thinking

Seeking and searching
To quench and keep quenched
